As the time designated for the birth of Christ approaches, I am glad you are searching for ways to put aside the influence of the world and focus on the gifts of the Spirit.    Although I’ve always been a Christian, at times it was difficult to not get caught up in the more commercial aspect of the season.  As hard as I fought to focus on our Savior’s birth, I still felt compelled to provide the appropriate gifts for friends and family.   When our children were young, I used Christmas as an opportunity to focus more on their “needs” than their “wants,” but with the advertising tactics all around us, our children always believed they “needed” every new product available.  Now they have families of their own and face the same struggles. 

 

Words of our bishop each December for the past few years ring in my ears:  “Years from now your children won’t remember what gift you bought them for Christmas.  What they will remember is the time you spent with them.” 

 

The same goes for friends.  Some may be afraid to suggest foregoing gifts for the fear of appearing cheap or stingy, but I think you’ll find that they will be glad you were the one to suggest it.

What better opportunity to teach our children about the Savior than to shut off the outside world (turn off the TV!) and spend time with them.  I believe this collection of scriptures, with suggested Christmas songs, and a story for each day is a wonderful way to accomplish at least two things.

 

             1.               Teach your children of Christ

             2.               Spend valuable time with them

 

I believe that as you take the time to share these things with your family, your blessings will multiply.  Maybe someone’s heart will be softened.  You may feel a peace that you have been missing.  Your eyes may be opened to a greater understanding.  You may feel the need to repair a relationship, or forgive someone who’s hurt you. You may decide it’s time to go back to church, or sing in the choir.  Whatever the Spirit whispers to you, I hope you will listen, and follow.

Thank you so much for sending 24 Days of Christmas.  I appreciate your insight.  The book is lovely and inspiring.  I truly appreciate your comment concerning singing hymns.  Music often is the language of the Spirit.  I know this true, because I have seen and felt the spiritual changes in Sacrament meetings, classrooms and dance studios when I play or sing.  Musicians who dedicate themselves to communicating the Spirit through their music never work alone.  We are surrounded by hosts of heavenly voices assisting us.  Just as the Angel Rafael called down the Heavenly Choirs, singing hymns and carols invites the Spirit into our midst.  Thank you for including appropriate music in your book.  Bless you.
