The Family First
Newsletter Good morning!
I treated myself to a vacation in Vegas last week. I went with six other women with the sole purpose of getting away. You might wonder what someone like me, who doesn't drink or gamble, might do in Las Vegas. Actually, I spent a lot of time thinking about this newsletter.
For the past eleven years the newsletter has contained three or four articles written by a variety of people. When I had something on my mind, I wrote my own. I never knew from one week to the next what the newsletter would cover. In some ways that's good, but I've been thinking lately about narrowing it down to cover some of the things I think will most benefit all of our readers. You might say that I want to simplify the information.
To give you just a very brief history, I started Emerson Publications way back in 1989. I spent a lot of time promoting the printed version of my book, "All They'll Need to Know." Once the internet became available, I realized I could market it to a much larger audience. So, in 2002, I revised the book, printed another 5,000 copies, and created a website. I wrote articles and sent lots of emails. I made phone calls and placed ads. I paid for ads in this newsletter long before I bought the rights to publish Family First myself. All the hard work paid off because I've now sold myself out of print and only make it available as an e-book.
Thinking about all of that, I realized that my little 32 page book really brought me to where I am today. The topics that interest me are all about "being prepared." It's really a very broad topic, which includes taking care of your health and also managing your money. It's not just about survival in the sense of having a year's supply of food or a 72 hour kit so that you can survive in the most extreme circumstances. It really covers every aspect of your life. You may jump into marriage believing that all you need is love, but once you're married, you realize that if you'd done a little more homework, the test might be a little easier.
This publication will continue to be Family First, because I believe the family is our first priority and central to everything in life. Starting next week, you're going to see some changes. Here's what I have in mind:
1. You'll receive the newsletter weekly, just like you do now.
2. There will be one article each week that will somehow be tied into being prepared! This will really push ME to be more prepared so I can share the information with you.
3. Fewer ads! This will be more informational and less promotional.
4. Shorter length. You won't need to feel guilty because you don't have time to read four articles. The new Family First will just have one item of information.
5. I'd like to also include tips and ideas from you, the reader. If I've written about something you have questions about, or an experience that would help others, I'd love to include it in the next issue.
As with every new year, I have new goals and expectations for myself. With the passing of my mother at the start of this new year, I'm probably assessing my life more now than ever before. I also think going through this experience with her, and with my family, has given me an even deeper appreciation for being prepared for what life has to offer. Life doesn't promise us a smooth road, but if you plan ahead, you don't have to hit a dead end. Just follow the detour and keep moving forward. In the end, you'll reach the destination, and it might be even sweeter than the place you intended to go.
Ralph Waldo Emerson is no relation to me, although my grandfather was named "Emerson" after this great thinker, and my business is named for my grandfather. Here's a quote to give you a jump start on the week.
"Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen." Ralph Waldo Emerson
I have decided that 2008 is going to be GREAT!
What will YOU decide today?
